The cliché of the unwashed, long-haired programmer is of course a myth ... most of the time. Nevertheless, programming requires enthusiasm. It doesn't prevent you from going to the bathroom and the hairdresser, but it does take some time.

In this chapter, you will learn the syntax of PHP, the most important language constructs, and the basics.

5.1 Operators

Operators have one main task: to connect data with each other. The data that are connected are called operands. An operator works with one, two, or three operands.[ 35 ] The most common case is two operands. An operand is a variable or a literal. Here’s an example with literals:
