In the beginning ... was IBM. In the 1970s, IBM developed the Structured English Query Language (SEQUEL), a query language that made it possible to communicate with a database "in English." This became SQL, which has since become a standard. The terminology is a constant source of confusion. Many programmers, especially older ones, still pronounce SQL as sequel, probably because they were still familiar with the old standard.
