Photographing people from above tends to make them look acquiescent. This pose has precisely the opposite effect. If you want to get a person to look strong and aloof, then photograph them from slightly below. The viewer has to look up to the subject and the model looks down on the viewer. The folded arms in variation #1 add to the feeling of distance by blocking the model’s torso. This makes the pose appear defensive.
