Chapter 2 discussed the two main pieces of backup software. In this chapter, we will discuss the most
common pieces of hardware that are used as backup targets.
In general, backup media can be broken up into two major categories: physical and virtual. The
difference is how the underlying hardware is addressed. Physical media do not have any abstraction
layer that presents the hardware in a format or manner other than its native format. Virtual media do the
same thing as physical hardware, but use a combination of software and hardware to make disk storage
look like physical tape hardware.
