were relatively evenly distributed between the five file systems. Additionally, the file systems were
structured in a horizontal directory structure, which the backup administrator attempted to take
advantage of by splitting backups along the directory lines. However, the backups still took too much
time to complete due to the scan and indexing times required by the large quantities of files.
Solution: the company acquired a source-based deduplication backup solution to perform the
backup. Once the initial deduplicated backup was taken, the backups were completing nightly, well
within the required backup window.
