So when would the guest OS backup method be used? While the ability to perform the hypervisor-
level backups can largely mitigate the necessity to perform guest OS backups by eliminating many of the
issues, the guest OS–level backup can provide a level of granularity that can more selectively pick what is
backed up and what is ignored. The guest OS backup still provides a superior method of performing VDI
and data stream level backups of SQL Server and Exchange, where the VSS-based method of backing up
via the hypervisor only provides a point-in-time granularity based on the last snapshot taken at the
hypervisor.
