Envision Maria, an exceptionally bright and driven woman, immersed in studying international tax laws at a top-tier university in the United States. She's being mentored by outstanding professors and consistently ranks at the top of her class. Naturally, she graduates as valedictorian and swiftly lands a position at a leading global tax advisory firm.

Now, consider Martin. Like Maria, he's pursuing international tax law, but at a less renowned university known for its lower rankings, subpar teaching staff, and lackluster faculty. Furthermore, Martin lacks the drive typically seen in top students and is nowhere near valedictorian status.

Nevertheless, Martin completes his studies and secures a job at an international tax advisory company.

The question arises: who is more likely to succeed, Maria or Martin? Intuitively, many would suggest Maria.

However, the narrative shifts when considering their interpersonal skills. Maria, despite her brilliance, isn't well-received by her peers and clients. They perceive her as arrogant, overly confident, and humorless—a classic “tax nerd’’ with limited social finesse.

In contrast, Martin is universally liked. His social intelligence, negotiation skills, and ability to connect with people make him a favorite among clients and colleagues alike.

So, who's more likely to achieve greater success? I'd argue for Martin. His knowledge may be less than Maria's, but he compensates with his ability to learn and adapt.
