In the intricate world of negotiation, a key to success lies not only in identifying and leveraging your variables for optimal NegoEconomics but also in adeptly handling non-negotiable variables. These are elements that, due to constraints like company policies or legal regulations, remain inflexible and require a different strategic approach. For example, your management doesn't allow you to change delivery terms, or you are legally prevented from asking for a longer line of credit from the supplier.

Non-negotiables, by their nature, may seem to limit the negotiation space. However, with strategic transparency and understanding, they can be managed effectively. When engaging in collaborative negotiations, especially within partnerships or SMARTnerships, it's crucial to declare non-negotiable variables early on. This approach fosters trust and sets clear boundaries for the negotiation process. Moreover, explaining the rationale behind these non-negotiables can maintain, and even elevate, the level of trust, ensuring a smoother negotiation flow.

However, the way these non-negotiables are communicated is key. Simply stating that certain variables are off-limits, without offering explanations, can lead to a breakdown in communication and potentially shut down the negotiation entirely.
