CHAPTER 4Tactics: Introduction: Negotiation Tactics

Negotiation approaches vary greatly among individuals. Each of us has a unique perception of negotiation, and our responses to stress and pressure during these interactions differ significantly.

Two key factors stand out in successful negotiation. Firstly, it's crucial to recognize the negotiation style of your counterpart and adapt your strategy accordingly. Secondly, and of equal importance, is understanding your own negotiation tendencies. Are you prone to confrontation? If so, what triggers this response? Could it be the attitude of the other party, influence from your management, or external stressors?

I've delineated five primary negotiation styles: Combative, Concession, Stalling, Compromise, and Collaborative.

Negotiation, as we know, is not a one-size-fits-all process; it is a science that demands a keen understanding of various tactics and the wisdom to apply them effectively.

The elements in this chapter begin by discussing “the combative negotiator,” a type of behavior that unravels the aggressive, often confrontational style of negotiation. This approach, while sometimes effective, can be a double-edged sword, potentially leading to a breakdown in communication and trust. Understanding the dynamics of combative negotiation equips you with the knowledge to either employ or counteract this method when necessary.
