ELEMENT 45Closing the Deal: Strategies for Effective Negotiation Conclusions

As you approach the end of a negotiation, the crucial moment to close the contract arises. This phase is reached when you have crafted an offer that addresses the other party's needs while closely aligning with your objectives. To ensure readiness for closure, confirm affirmative answers to the following critical questions:

  • Consensus on demands: Are all parties in agreement with the set demands? Have these been firmly established and accepted?
  • Decision-making authority (mandate): Does the other party have the necessary authority to make a binding decision? Are key decision-makers present?
  • Market comparison: Has the counterpart engaged with competitors or other parties? Lack of comparative insight might hinder their decision-making capability.
  • Time constraints: Is the negotiation influenced by a deadline? Negotiations often accelerate as deadlines approach, leading to decisions driven more by time pressure than mutual agreement.

Negative Closure Tactics

There are various ways to close a negotiation, some more favorable than others. Ideally, an agreement emerges organically after thorough bargaining. However, certain tactics, which are often perceived negatively, may push the other party into an agreement and should be used judiciously.
