11.5. Normative data
Many businesses want to know the significance of certain research data—whether a certain score is cause for concern or not. Companies also want to know how other companies score on selected items. "What's normal?" they often ask. What they're asking for is called normative data.
There are a couple of schools of thought regarding normative data. One school says data comparisons matter. They provide points of reference. Managers often want to know, "Am I normal or am I way out of line? Am I in really bad shape? How do I compare with others? Give me some sense of how bad or good I am compared with others in my industry or others with similar logistical, political, and market issues."
