Understanding
the Mind
The brain has remained a mystery because it is so hard to
access. The 1.4 kilos of soft pink and gray tissue is wrapped
in a tough skin, padded by a bath of cerebral spinal fluid,
and encased in a bone-hard shell. Except for an elite crew of
neurosurgeons and scientists, no one has ever witnessed a
brain at work. Most conclusions about brain function have
been drawn from the study of people whose brains have
been damaged by stroke, injury, or congenital defects.
