1.2.2 IT management costs
Due to historical reasons, the IT environment in large companies are mostly
divided into several departments. They often started with a mainframe or
midrange systems in the sixties or seventies. Later, in the eighties and nineties,
Windows and UNIX Systems were introduced, while UNIX groups can be further
divided in different hardware and OS variants. With the start of the new
millennium, an important new trend within the professional IT world can be seen:
the open source based Linux operating system.
