development of Storage Area Networks (SANs) has passed its experimental
phase and SAN has become a mature technology that allows businesses to
implement storage pooling and sharing today. SANs are high speed switched
networks designed to allow multiple computers to have shared access to many
storage devices.
Yet implementing a SAN does not in itself solve the basic problems of meeting
the requirements of the ever growing explosion of data. Sophisticated software
architectures will be needed to handle them and take advantage of the hardware.
