directly connected to the NAS filer via SCSI or Fibre Channel. The Backup
application sends NDMP meta commands to the filer, which then backs up its
data up to the attached tape. The tape devices can be directly attached to the
NAS filer to another appliance or to a backup server. The embedded NDMP
protocol separates the control and the data path. With NDMP, tape devices,
robotics, network-attached primary storage, and backup servers can
communicate over an Ethernet network for streamlined data backup and
