The newest standard is designated as wireless standard N, scheduled to have final approval by the IEEE in 2007 (originally it was 2006, but it was not ratified). Prior to the final approval, several vendors have begun to offer products for this standard based on the initially released specifications. Users who buy the products now should be OK even if there are changes to the standard in the mean time (which, if there are any, are likely to be minor and would only require an additional software or firmware download).

The N standard achieves much higher speeds than the G standard using a technology called multiple inputs, multiple outputs (MIMO). MIMO does exactly what you might expect: It uses several radiobased connections (in both directions) ...
