In general, hotspots are either free sites or pay sites. Free sites are typically offered by businesses such as hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants to attract customers. Pay sites are more numerous and widespread. Many business-like hotels are using them to extract an extra $10 from your wallet. Pay sites are also growing rapidly due to the entry of large wireless cell phone companies, such as T-Mobile, Cingular, and SBC. Four basic types of hotspot services exist, as shown in Table 14-2.
