Typical approaches to learning and development (L&D) and typical organizations don’t exist. Organizations function in many different ways depending on their contexts. And so does L&D. Contingency theory tells us that definitions of aims, policies and strategies, learning programmes, lists of activities and analyses of the role of the L&D function are only valid if they are related to the context or circumstances of the organization.
