Learning events are evaluated to establish how well they have achieved their specified objectives and to identify any improvements that need to be made. This is the final stage of the training sequence, although evaluation is a matter for consideration in each of the earlier stages of the sequence: planning (setting objectives), delivering (continuous assessment) and transfer (checking on how well learning has been put into practice).
Learning events evaluation should be distinguished from the evaluation of the overall impact of learning and development on the organization and, by implication, the effectiveness of the L&D function as covered in Chapter 7.
