Apprenticeships exist to meet the skills needs of employers and to give young people the opportunity to embark on a worthwhile career. This chapter starts with a description of the nature of apprenticeships and then describes how they should function as defined in the standards developed in the UK in recent years.
Apprenticeships are paid jobs with an accompanying skills development programme provided by on-and off-the-job training.
