How can you configure a client to send data off its subnet when its default gateway router has gone down? Typically, the answer is you can't. Most host operating systems don't allow you to change data routing. Sure, if a host's default gateway router goes down, the rest of the network will converge, but the network doesn't share that information with the hosts. Take a look at Figure 10.1; you can see what I am talking about. There are actually two routers available to forward data for the local subnet, but the hosts only know about one of them. They learn of this router when you give them the default gateway.
I am sure that you are asking, "Is there another way to use the other router?" ...
