For years, the three-layer model has been used to design and evaluate networks with a good amount of success. The three-layer model, as shown in Figure 1.1, provided you with three design areas. The three layers are the access, distribution, and core layers. Using a layered approach allows a network designer to logically define the network in terms of functions and devices. The result is a network that can be easily managed and has deterministic failure built in.
