Virtual private network (VPN) is a term that is used frequently, but has different meanings, depending on who you talk to and the context of your discussion. Let's define what I mean here when I discuss VPNs. When I say VPN, I am talking about a method for connecting two disparate networks, generally over the Internet. Also, for the purposes of discussion, I also assume that the sessions will be encrypted sessions. IPsec is the standard that you will be using in this chapter.
