QUESTIONS

  1. Conduct a search for the term "laptop computer" on eBay.com or eBay in the country where you live using the appropriate translation. Which of the following are present before and after doing the search?

    1. Scoping options

    2. Word wheel

    3. Canned searches (browse categories to determine this)

    4. Clustering

    5. Grouping

    6. Suggestions and best bets

Then do the same search for Amazon.com or Amazon in your country.

Now purposely misspell the terms, like this: "laptpo computer." How does each site handle misspellings? Which is better? How could both improve?

  2. Think back to the last large purchase you made, such as a car, home, or even which school or university to attend. You probably had criteria by which you made that decision. For example, for a car you might have wanted a particular model, within a given price range, and a particular color. What were the primary criteria used in your decision making process? How could these be represented as facets? What were the possible values for each facet?

  3. Examine your personal collection of CDs or books. What are all the properties of them that are important to you? For books, the traditional facets are author, title, and subject. What other facets are salient?

  4. Now suppose you could create a database to catalogue your books or CDs. How would you describe the collection using facets?
