This article is short and practical. See the many other key publications of the Flamenco Search Interface Project: http://flamenco.berkeley.edu/pubs.html.
William Denton offers an excellent summary of facets, as well as practical tips on how to create and use facets on the Web. He references key academic sources, but keeps the text light and readable. This is an excellent starting point to understanding facets with how-to information.
