Numeric data is represented in various ways. The use of hexadecimal number system is
a convenient way to communicate bit patterns. However, the use of the decimal number
system for numeric data is prevalent in real life. On the other side, computers and digital
systems operate only on binary information in VHDL. These various number formats must
be understood by the computer which number system is being used. Table 13.1 summa-
rizes the methods of specifying values in binary, hex, and decimal for VHDL.
