Queue-Based Load Leveling is an effective way of minimizing the impact of occurrences of high demand on availability. By introducing a queue between a client and service, we are able to throttle or restrict the number of requests that are being handled by the service at a time. This allows for smoother user experience. Take the following diagram as an example:

The preceding diagram shows a client submitting a request to a queue to be processed and the result saved to a table. The queue acts to prevent the function from being overwhelmed by a sudden spike in activity.
