As the software industry has evolved and distributed systems involve more services and applications, being able to have a collective and consistent view of a system has become a huge asset. Popularized by services such as New Relic and Microsoft Application Insights, application performance management (APM) systems use information recorded about applications and infrastructure, known as telemetry, to monitor, manage performance, and view the availability of a system.
