In this setup, the edge is directly connected to the DCS or the PLC through a fieldbus protocol:

This means that the edge device must implement and incorporate the connectors to the fieldbus protocols, such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or MODBUS, in order to gather the data to be transferred to the cloud. At first sight, this architecture seems very simple, but it's actually not that easy to implement and maintain.
