Chapter 48. Hyphenation and Justification
Hyphenation and justification—usually called “H&J” by those who love fine typography—are the controls (along with the dictionaries we talk about in Chapter 42) which your composition engine uses to decide how much text to fit on a line. We discuss composition in Chapter 46. In QuarkXPress, these settings are created and saved in the Edit Hyphenation and Justification dialog box. InDesign uses two separate features to control H&J—Justification and Hyphenation—which are found on the Paragraph palette’s flyout menu. The two applications share similar settings, but InDesign adds a couple of new features to the process.
