Over that time, some APIs have been deprecated in favor of newer ones—often to fix bugs, to improve security or simply because an improved API was added that rendered the prior ones obsolete. Yet, many deprecated APIs—some from as far back as Java 1.2, which was released in December 1998— have remained available in every new version of Java, mostly for backward compatibility.
