The answer to the question, “Which knobs do I turn?” is “Not many!” The nice thing about SQL Server 2000 is that it provides optimal SQL Server performance for most database installations right out of the box. The majority of possible tuning parameters deal with machines that have multiple processors and the capability to run a parallel query. SQL Server 2000 limits the amount of tuning required by the DBA. Keep in mind that for the best possible performance, tuning is a many-phase process. It includes the hardware, the installation of the operating system, the installation and tuning of SQL Server, and the overall design of the databases and applications.
