Most new database projects follow the same pattern. We are developing this new system to take the place of an older one. We currently have a decade or so of information stored in system A. When we go live with system B, we need to leave all our previously collected information intact. So, a fair amount of time is spent designing the database schema and taking into account that we will need to preserve the information as it exists now.
