The System Monitor is an excellent tool for monitoring SQL Server and the Windows NT operating system.
Don't let the System Monitor drive you crazy! Instead of trying to track a multitude of counters, track five to eight key performance indicators. Anything over eight or ten different counters makes it difficult to determine what is happening.
Following are some useful counters to track:
Processor: % Processor Time
SQLServer: BufferManager: Cache Hit Ratio
PhysicalDisk: % Disk Time
SQLServer: General Statistics: User Connections
NBT Connections: Bytes Total/sec
