Upgrading SQL Server Replication
As you begin the process of upgrading SQL on your existing servers, some of those servers might be slated for upgrades at different times. If replication is involved, things could get complicated. Keep in mind the following guidelines, and the task of upgrading SQL Server replication will be made simpler:
The distributor must be running the highest version of SQL Server and should be upgraded first. The publishers should be the next servers to upgrade, followed by the subscribers.
During the process of upgrading SQL 7.0 replication servers to SQL 2000, the database compatibility level must at least be temporarily set to 70 or later. The upgrade will fail if your servers are set to 65 or earlier compatibility levels. ...
