Before you start monitoring your system, and especially before you start trying to improve its performance by buying new hardware or uninstalling applications, it is important that you understand some of the underlying factors that influence your computer's performance. It is useful to divide these factors into three broad categories: hardware, Windows configuration, and installed software.
