The Status Bar
At the very bottom of the NOOK screen, you’ll find the Status Bar (Figure 3-7), which keeps you up to date with the state of your NOOK and any alerts and notifications, such if you’re having a problem with your WiFi connection, you get an update from NOOK Friends, or a variety of other reasons. The Status Bar shows no matter what you’re doing; it’s always visible, even if you’re reading a book.

The Status Bar is divided into two sections. The one on the far right gives you details about the state of your NOOK, such as its battery level. The one on the right sends you alerts and notifications.
Over on the right, what you’ll generally see is straightforward:
- An icon that shows if you’ve got a WiFi connection.
Note
The WiFi icons tells you not just that you’re connected, but also indicates how strong the connection is. The more number of concentric partial circles, the greater the strength.
- An icon that shows how much battery life you’ve got left.
- An icon that displays the time.
Note
The time is normally displayed on a 12-hour clock. If you prefer having it displayed on a 24-hour clock, change it via the Time Settings screen.
If you’ve muted the NOOK, you’ll also see a mute symbol.
Over on the left side, the Status Bar has a lot more action. Plenty of different icons may appear there. Here’s a list of the most common:
