Chapter 6. Read Books, Magazines, and Newspapers

True to its roots, the NOOK is a natural reading device. If you already own another NOOK, or if you’ve used the NOOK app on the variety of devices for which it’s available, you’ll feel right at home when you get inside a book and start reading.

Open a Book

Almost as if to confirm the popular conception of the NOOK Tablet as primarily a reading device, Barnes & Noble has provided a number of ways to get directly to the book, magazine, or newspaper you’re reading, always quickly and usually instantly from any screen you might be on.

First, as discussed in The Keep Reading and More Menus, over on the upper left part of the screen on the Home screen (Figure 1-4), you’ll see an icon of an open book, with the words “Keep Reading” next to it, and next to that, the name of the last book, magazine, or newspaper you were reading (Figure 6-1). Tap that icon to jump to the most recent page of whatever you were reading. All distractions on the screen, including the Status Bar at the bottom, will disappear, leaving you with text on a white background (and the book title at the top of the page).

But that icon and descriptive text is available only from the Home screen. If you want to jump to your current book from any other screen, just look for the open book icon in the status bar (Figure 6-2). Tapping that icon will give you the same result as the other open book icon on the Home screen.

If you want to read something other than the last thing you read, ...
