Clients for Messages Server
For Macs, the Messages client application (in OS X 10.8 and later) is the best to use and most trouble free, seamlessly accessing all features in Messages. Messages Server works with older versions of the Mac iChat client, as well as the latest and greatest version. There are also a number of other Jabber clients for Macs as well.
For Windows, Linux, Unix, mobile phones, and iPad and iPod touch devices, you can use any instant-messaging client that supports XMPP or is Jabber-compatible. Instant-messaging clients often support multiple protocols. A lot of XMPP clients are available, and more are popping up all the time. If you’re looking for an open source client for OS X, Windows, and Linux, try Pidgen (www.pidgin.im). Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com) is a Windows commercial product with a free version and a $25 pro version.
For iOS, you need to install a Jabber-compatible client app. If you search the App Store, you’ll find many dozens, including several that are free. Monal from Anurodh Pokharel is a good free app. The $9.99 BeeJive IM with Push (from BeeJive, Inc., www.beejive.com) is a popular iOS app that supports multiple chat protocols, including XMPP. Separate versions are available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. Another option is Agile Messenger HD Pro ($7.99 from Agilemobile.com.).
