Database Servers for Home or Office
For home or office, multiuser databases can give users access to shared data from their Macs, Windows PCs, and even iOS devices. Although Mountain Lion Server has the built-in PostgreSQL database software, you have to be a database programmer to use it. If you want to create or install a multiuser database with a graphics user interface, you have several choices. Here are two:
FileMaker Server (www.filemaker.com) can invoice, label, track inventory, and manage contacts with maps and video. Users of Mac, Windows, and iPads can access the database server with some nice-looking interfaces. For the user, you can create simple data entry forms or use sophisticated graphical interfaces. FileMaker is also a software development platform, so lots of prebuilt FileMaker-based applications are available. FileMaker also comes with several prebuilt databases that might meet your needs out of the box. For iPads and iPhone clients, just download the free FileMaker Go app from the Apple App Store.
