You don't have to understand HTML code to generate output with a table of contents or a table of pages. However, if you understand the basics of how the code works, it makes it easier to customize your output. The table of contents file has to communicate via the browser with the main body file. When you click on an item in the table of contents, the browser uses links and references to determine where to go in the body file. "Exploring the Frame File" earlier in this chapter shows how the table of contents and body pages are set up within a frame page. This example shows how the links between the two pages work.
