12.3. AC Motor Drive Systems

The AC electric motors are commonly used in practice covering a wide range of applications. There are many types of AC motors with different features and modes. They are divided into single-phase, two-phase, three-phase, and multiphase, depending on the number of ac supply voltages. Also, they are divided into synchronous and asynchronous motors, depending on the speed of rotation during normal operation. In most practical high power applications the three-phase motors are used which are supplied by three symmetrical ac voltages with 120° phase displacement.
