Converting Between Different Package Methods

Although this chapter focused on the RPM system, there are other packaging methods that you might run into or might need to use on your system. Luckily, a utility called Alien enables you to convert between different packages. Alien can convert between rpm, dpkg, Stampede slp, and Slackware tgz file formats.

You can download the latest version of Alien from its homepage at http://kitenet.net/programs/alien/. The installation instructions vary from Linux distribution to distribution, so I urge you to check out the Web site for full installation directions for your computer.
