Automation and Deployment Tools

In the next chapter, you will find instructions for a single-instance installation of IIS 8.0 on Windows Server 2012. However, most professional IIS 8.0 installations won't be manually installing a single instance of IIS on a single server. Automating deployment is important in most organizations, whether it is workstations, applications, servers, or IIS installations. Even when manual installations are feasible in terms of time and location, automated deployments are preferable because exact configurations can easily be achieved.

Over the various versions of Windows and IIS, automated deployment has improved steadily. WMI scripting for configurations, remote installation service (RIS), deployment and unattended installs, and even third-party cloning tools have all been used effectively and made deployment much easier for administrators. While WMI has been deprecated, Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8.0 fully support PowerShell for automation. Web Deploy 2.0 is also available to aid the installation and replication of IIS installations to multiple servers.

Most professional IIS 8.0 installations are likely using some sort of volume licensing agreement to license Windows Server 2012.
