DESIGN: SONY CORPORATION TOKYO

I REMEMBER HAVING DINNER IN NEW YORK IN 1979 WITH A FRIEND OF MINE who was a fashion designer and had just come back from Tokyo. We were with a big group of people, but I was fascinated by the story he was telling me about people listening to music on the subway. “They had personal cassette players, not much bigger than a cassette itself.” It seemed totally unreal to me, impossible almost, but it was the birth of The Walkman. Of course, it changed the world in its own way.

Fast forward to 1999 and Sony decided to redesign the Sony Walkman logo to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The brand was in need of a logo that reflected the product’s new features—including ...
