The idea of writing a book must be attractive to a lot of (most) people. It’s an ego boost, especially to a designer whose scope of services includes book design. Most are smart enough to stop there and realize that designing is what they do, and that writing books—especially design books—should be left to Steven Heller.

I always counted myself as one of those smart ones, and I had more than one conversation with Rockport’s previous editor, Kristin Ellison, in which we both agreed that perhaps writing a book wasn’t a good fit for me.
