In the next two chapters, we will discuss the propagation of various types of waves in finite size crystals. It is instructive to look at some of the general attributes of such waves in a medium made of discrete, periodic atoms. Recall that a wave is characterized by various parameters such as wavelength, λ, angular frequency, ω = 2πν phase, φ, and intensity, I = A2, where A is the amplitude of the wave [Fig. 1–18a].
