Functions performed using macrostructured fibers include supercontinuum

generation in tapered hole fibers [7], dispersion management [8], fibers with

decreased bend loss for compact optical fiber wiring [9], and fibers for polari-

metric sensing [10] and lasers [11]; this latter one is shown in Fig. 6.2.

The introduction of materials in the holes adds the attractive possibility to

manipulate the guiding properties of the fiber. This can be achieved by inter-

action of the guided mode with actively controllable materials in the holes or by

using the inserted materials for other active functions, such as a metal electrode
