23.6.1 Fiber Optic Thermal Sensor
Fiber optic thermal sensors are based on two major technologies: changes in
the relaxation time of fluorescent [106] material due to temperature changes, and
changes in the optical path of a Fabry–Perot interferometer [107–110].
In fiber optic thermal sensors based on fluorescence, the fiber probe commu-
nicates optically with a temperature-sensitive fluorescence material such as phos-
phor [106] (Fig. 23.11). The fluorescence signal is activated by pulses laser diode
and is transmitted back through the fiber to a detector.
The phosphor tip, at the far end, is either embedded in the medium to be
measured or placed
