23.5.3.2 Pollution Control
A portable FTIR and long optical fibers may enable one to conduct environ-
mental on-site pollution measurements in water reservoirs, soil, and marine
environments with very high sensitivity. Fuel contamination was detected in soil
[91, 92], and several researches were conducted on different liquids, especially in
water [65, 68, 92–95]. It was shown that pollutants such as benzene could be
detected in water. Lately real-time monitoring during a pilot scale test of a natural
aquifer in Munich, Germany, took place [78, 96]. During that study, variations in
pollutant concentration profiles were recorded following injection of test quan-
